What New Marine Corps Recruits Go Through In Boot Camp

We got an inside look at the United States Marine Corps’ intense 13-week basic training program. Senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent five days at the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot in Parris Island, South Carolina, where he observed different companies at various stages of training.
Recruits endure a series of intense physical challenges such as entering a gas chamber, rappelling down a 47-foot-tower, and fighting each other with “pugil sticks.” The Marine Corps is the only US military branch that separates male and female recruits during basic training. In a statement to Business Insider, a spokesperson from the Marine Corps Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island said, “The same gender platoon model allows for appropriate acclimation to the training environment, development of key relationships with drill instructors, and optimal focus during the beginning of their transformation.”
After weeks of extreme physical and psychological challenges, training culminates with “The Crucible,” a 54-hour event where recruits endure exhausting combat scenarios while running on minimal food and sleep.

@Archie Derham Tell me where I said it was specific to military? No? Right because I didn’t. In fact I didn’t even credit the entire military because I can’t speak to all branches but I can speak to the Marine Corps and several close relatives and the type of men the are. This does not mean all marines are good people nor does it say you can’t be honorable if you’re not in the military. You know, honorable. The type of person that doesn’t put words in someone else’s mouth or try and twist their words into something they are not solely because they feel the need to stir the pot. 👍

My brother and I had a pretty rough falling out Easter of this year. He shipped out to Marine boot camp last month and I've been praying for him every day. UPDATE: Hey all! On August 16, I got up super early and took my brother out to the airport and he flew over to NC for the next leg of his training. Leave time was awesome and we both spent a lot of time together. On September 14, he got on a plane and headed out West to California at Camp Pendleton and that's where he's at now! He said he might get to be home for Christmas so that'd be really dope!

I remember sitting and watching these videos before I left for Bootcamp, and now here I am living out my dream! My advice for anyone in the DEP watching this is to not give up! I know at times it feels so far out of reach, or even impossible, but I promise you at the end it's all so worth it. Remember it's all a game and you can never do anything right in their eyes. There's always going to be someone out there working harder than you, so make sure you always give it your all. Bootcamp is going to be the most fun you've ever had hating your life. Best of luck and stay motivated Devil Pups!

15 дней назад
Tyler +1
Tyler

@MegaWolf4187 I will try to answer both Qs. I was enlisted infantry. If you are active duty you can take college classes but they will be mostly remote. When I was in this was very difficult as we were out in the field more weeks than not (might be different now that wars are over). Do NOT assume your command will help you out with college regardless of what anyone tells you. Now, you can do the reserves and go to civilian college as well. You will have to show up for training/work one weekend a month and do a 2 week training exercise every year. You will also NOT get the GI Bill. Me personally, I did 4 years active (no college while in) then got out and used my GI Bill. I was 4 years behind everyone else but did not have to pay for tuition and got a monthly living stipend I was able to live off of as a bachelor. Also, I felt being a little older was an advantage because I was more mature, especially after doing 4 years Marine Infantry. For pilots: you will have to become an officer which means getting a 4 year bachelors degree then going through the officer training pipeline which starts with Officer Candidate School (I was not an officer so you may want to fact check me). I believe officers don’t get to guarantee their job, instead you make a wishlist (top 3) at OCS and hope you get one of those. Being a pilot is very competitive itself and once you are a pilot getting to fly what you want can be another competitive step as well. One piece of advice for this is: MAKE SURE YOU WILL PASS THE FLYING PHYSICAL BEFORE YOU PURSUE THIS DREAM!!! I met a lot of officers who worked in supply/logistics/etc who joined the Marines solely to be a pilot but ended up failing the physical (finding out they are colorblind and things like that). If you are interested, talk to your local recruiter but fact check what they say. One good way to do this is reach out to recruiters outside your area. Tell them you are outside their area (this means they can't recruit you so they have no reason to lie) and ask them the big questions. Be sure you are very polite, respectful, and grateful as they are super busy and they will get nothing out of it. Hope that helps and make your dreams happen!

Shortly after I graduated from high school, I was driving down a street in my hometown and I realized that I knew where every road went and I had this weird feeling. Like I had gotten everything I could from that place. I don't remember where I had set off to go, but I ended up driving to the Marine Corps Recruiting Office a couple towns over. Less than a month later I was standing on the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego thinking, "WTF did you do, Luke?" Four years and two Iraq deployments later, I was honorably discharged. Looking back on those days, sometimes it's hard to believe that was me. It's like a crazy-ass chapter tucked into an otherwise relatively boring book. And those four years felt like such a long time. It was like stepping into another life. I grew up so much. Saw and did so many just... insane things. All of us did. I joined because I knew I'd always wonder what it would have been like to live that life, and because you can never know until you have. It was an incredible experience.

I completed Marine Corps Bootcamp at Parris Island, SC on Nov 6, 1998 and completed my 4 year tour (Corporal / E-4) on Aug 9, 2002. I went into boot camp at age 19 and was in very good physical condition, was a cross country and track and field distance runner (Mile: 4:49, 2 Mile: 10:24, 5K: 16:24) and boot camp wasn't a "cake walk" despite the fact I was in better shape than 99.9% of those in there with me. I came in 146lbs and left at 146lbs (5'9) as I was about as fit as I could possible be before boot camp. Typical recruits either lose a lot of fat and or gain a fair amount of muscle in those 13 weeks (if you were basically just a muscle head/ weight lifter you finish boot camp being the fittest you're likely to ever be again). It takes a TON of heart to make it through that training especially if you go into it not being in great shape. I was inspired to see other recruits whom weren't in great physical condition endure what must have been a living hell for them. Anyway, this video is only a TINY glimpse into what Marine recruits go through but gives you a general / rough idea.

My son went in a few years ago. He graduated high school in June and was at Parris Island in August. He was not an athletic kid…..at all. The whole time he was there I was worried as can be. On top of the normal physical stress that the recruits experience, he also caught pneumonia (which I hear most everyone there catches). I was thinking the whole time, “OMG, he’s never gonna make it”, but he did, and I have so much pride and respect for what he achieved. Parris Island is definitely not summer camp, but once you’ve made it through, that’s something that no one could ever take away from you.

Typically, boot camp in all branches of the military is to prepare recruits for the military way of life. It is a series of mind games. Especially Marine Boot Camp. In most cases, just as the bus stops, and the door opens, a drill sergeant marches on and begins screaming. I once knew somebody who was in the Marines, when he got to boot camp, the D.I. just casually walked onto the bus with a pleasant smile, and politely welcomed everyone to Paris Island, and encouragingly said that they would become Marines upon graduation from Boot Camp. But, just when it seemed as if he was going to walk toward the back of the bus, and shake everyone's hand welcoming them, suddenly his expression turned mean and suddenly, "GET OFF MY BUS! YOu HAVE THIRTY SECONDS TO LINE UP ON THE FOOTPRINTS. SO YOU UNDERSTAND?!" They responded with a mumble. WHEN YOU ARE GIVEN AN ORDER YOU WILL SHOUT YES SIR. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?! They respond a little louder. "I CAN'T HEAR YOU! Think of it as if they want you to yell back at them. Only join the military if you want to be challenged, not just to find a job, or because you can't find anything else. While there us some truth in what recruiters tell you, always be on your guard. If you are not up to tough challenges, maybe the.military is not for you. It is not as easy to get in as one may think, but once you are in, it is much more difficult to get out. As new recruits enter the service, other people whose time us up and do not reenlist are getting out, and you may be replacing one of those people.

Iv got to say I spent a full week with the UK army as work exsperiance, looking at this video to what I saw, there's a lot exactly the same as what we went through, and seeing the full extent of this video, I think those kids that refuse to do school work should be made in to the men and women that serve our country's maybe then there won't be so much crime, but for those that chose to persue this fair enuf, I mean starting to mold our children from a young age is what shapes the people they become, don't allow yours yo be the next victim/perp to commit a crime

I wanted to join one of the branches of the military, but my parents didn't approve. I ended up working for the US Navy as a civilian employee. While I would never get the chance to go through boot camp like many; I had my own form of boot camp early in my civilian employee career. I had to learn the ropes the hard way and had many who belittled me because I was the lowest paid employee (Administrative Assistant) in the entire department with little chances of promotion, and deemed a failure. Today, 8 years after leaving that prior employer, I am a Deputy Program Manager; outranking those who dismissed me years ago.

It's not easy but practice makes perfect. Sit and fold your legs during marksmanship, it forms a triangle. Many fall over on their first tries. Just lean forward a bit. Rule number one of self defense, always aim at the weapon, steal it if you have to and take it to where it can be reported.

{{ I went through Parris Island in 1957 , yea , I know I " m a really old man ,lol . It was the best thing i ever did because if you can survive the island anything that you face in life after will be a piece of cake . I have the video paused at the climbing obstacle and I am reminded as to how scared I was because I am only 5ft 4 in tall an if you fall _ There is no safety net ! My platoon started with 70+ recruits and graduated with 50+ ,like the song says =You know it aint easy . So , if you are an undisciplined , know it all young teen , like I was , join the Marines ,you will get your a%$ kicked a few times but if you survive you will be thankful for the training because it is the hardest thing you will ever have to face in life.

The went through basic training in 07 at Fort Knox as a 19D cavalry scout and there wasn’t any women in training. Women went to a different base for basic training. So at the time the marines weren’t the only one to separate men and women but I guess it’s different now.

Best experience of my life. It doesn't matter who you are, you ask yourself at least once during boot, "What the hell did I get myself into?" In the end, it's worth every grueling second. KILL

I ask myself at work more than once "What the hell did I get myself into?"... Are you saying being a Marine is easier than tearing apart a car in a day, then rinse and repeat the entire week? Answer is yes, it is. FWIW, it would take me 2 months before I could do ~200 push-ups in 10 minutes. Try that, let me know how close you get before you give up, lol. Edit: Yes, I'm bragging; posted a lot of replies on this video, waiting for SOMEONE to call out my bull -💩

Best of luck to you both. A career in the Corps involves you both. A strong supportive wife can MAKE a Marine's career. A weak nagging wife can break a successful Marine's career or more likely, end a marriage. There will be hard times, but you may get to see and do things you only dreamed of. Good luck.
