Prostitution has been part of the fabric of Amsterdam for centuries. But some want the city to have a reputation for art and architecture, not sex and drugs. And that might mean closing the windows of the world-famous Red Light District for good.

I live in Amsterdam and I can tell you most locals avoid this district because of the hordes of tourists, plenty of them drunk or high, that only come to watch as if they were in a zoo.

I visited Amsterdam for the first time 25 yrs ago and it was very cool, red light district was weird to me but not crazy busy and the girls seemed respected. I went again just before covid hit and I found it horrible. Tourism has increased so much in that time. Gangs of men from all over the world disrespecting the women laughing and taking photos. Was a completely different city. Over run by tourism now. As are most European cities.

It’s nice that Insider isn’t just labeling Sex workers as ‘bad’ or just a hobby for rich people. And shows all sides of the story and shows perspectives of everyone.

As said in the video, since the 17th century The Red Light District is known as an entertainment area. I always get a double feeling if people who live in this neighbourhood complains about it being too party-esque. It is what you could expect.

I've always been fascinated with Amsterdam and consider it one of the major world cities like Tokyo, Paris and New York if not a minor one. People have always thought that the red light district as a memorable and touristy part of Amsterdam, even if one is not a customer to it. To shut down the red light district or atleast remove it from its identity, is like removing the eiffel tower from Paris. I get that they are aiming for a more wholesome identity but they're just making it another museum city when the rest of the Europe are all just museum cities as well.

Was there in July this year, the place is amazing right near the central station with unique architecture and surrounding. It’s not that big either you can go from One end to another and come back in less then 15 min. Went to two museums , van gough and the main museum. Amsterdam was beautiful. Even did the Heineken experience. I really enjoyed Amsterdam even better then London and Paris.

The fact that YouTube recommended this to me, makes me question their algorithm and the fact that I clicked it almost immediately makes me question my character, both at the same time.

I lived in amsterdam for a year as an exchange college student. I was never a customer of any drugs or sex but i really enjoyed the scene of the red light district. It's unique. It's beautiful. It is fascinating. There are many other places in Europe that are known for their architecture but there's only one Amsterdam and one Red Light District.

I always find the ways that people come up with in order to work-around local laws fascinating. For example, the sex workers, not allowed to attract customers whilst on the street/pavement, started beckoning from their front windows instead. This created a unique appearance with buildings and businesses creating purpose built front windows. All because of the local laws. Fascinating.

I’ve been to Amsterdam 6 times. Love the place. Never used their services but it was an amazing atmosphere around that place and Amsterdam won’t be the same without it. For better and for worse.

The red light district is one of the main attractions of Amsterdam. It's something unique that you can't find anywhere else in the world. Shutting it down would hurt their tourism.

As with all social issues this is a complex challenges. I did notice that brothels were closing due to city management pressure, not lack of demand.

I've been to Amsterdam a few times in the past. It was hard not to notice the girls in the windows and even harder to not look, as not all, but some were really quite attractive women. The only think I would ask is to do so respectfully. I noticed a group of young guys staring, laughing and even mocking them. Yes, they are there doing a very visible job but they deserve to be treated with respect just as anyone else.

OK but what actually does make it safer? I'm seeing lots of arguments about what people with vested interest hope will happen and no actual data on what the actual safest policy is.

If everything has to be marked as "Human rights" then that means drinking alcohol, consume drugs would win it too....

The goal is to attract people for art and architecture, that's great. When I think of those two things I think about creativity and the artist mind. The creative way is to rebrand the district. There is an art to sex and the female form and our sensuality. As far as architecture that's easy the women are literally working in these old historical buildings. I'm not going to elaborate because I'm not getting paid by their government but I feel like it's just another excuse to again control and shame women. This could be a simple and incredible opportunity to make what already exists better but......

Amsterdam doesn't want to be known for drugs and sex? That's like their whole deal, why all of a sudden?
