We got an inside look at what it's like on the first day for new cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Over 1,200 cadet candidates arrived on campus on a sweltering July morning for "Reception Day." After an emotional farewell with their families, the new cadets took the first steps of a rigorous six-weeks-long basic training regimen.

One of the biggest regrets in my life was not taking advantage of an opportunity provided to me while in basic training to go to a year prep school, then attend west point. Throughout my time in service, every west point officer I met was top notch. Everything came together for me after serving. The GL Bill paid for my college education at UT Austin, which I loved, I bleed burnt orange. But for me, and who I am, west point would have been a better fit.

@Doc Dildonica Yeaahh. They groom young children into joining with promise of "honor" and "free education." They'll say things like "most of us never even see battle" which indoctrinates our children into fighting a battle they can't even psychologically comprehend. Imagine thinking its okay for people in the military to go into middle schools and tell 12-14 year olds that they should join the death sentence that is the military.

I'm active duty enlisted, and got an invitation to West Point a few months ago while deployed. Honestly I just laughed with my team when I told them about it because I can't imagine having a college kid yell in my face now. Sure I'm young enough still to apply, but not so young as to not realize what a fool I'd be if I accepted

Another advantage of going to West Point though over a civilian college is money. It doesn’t cost money to go there and you get paid a decent stipend every month. If you go to a civilian college and do rotc you’ll have to pay or earn a scholarship. If you’re joining either way, West Point seems logically better if the education is comparable.

@Random Person I'd be volunteering for extra hardship for no real extra benefit. West Point is of course a very prestigious military academy, but that alone isolates the type of people/connections that could made as a result. In the military you could possibly gain rapport with superior officers as a result of both being Points, but civilian employers likely won't be as impressed as they would be if alternatively you had gone to a civilian ivy league university. For example, in STEM fields it's not uncommon to hear about X, Y, and Z School's program and how great it is compared to its competitors. West Point, while I'm sure has great education programs in its own right, is focused on producing Army Officers first and foremost, and even with that Points have gained a reputation for arrogance and not really having an edge over officers that went through ROTC or OCS. The nickname "Ring Knocker" is often aimed at them on account of most graduates having the habit of knocking their class rings on things. TL;DR West Point's only modern benefit is the connections that can be made as a result, but if education/learning and reputation is your focus there are better alternatives. Personal example; before I graduated high school I was speaking to a recruiter about my ambitions of eventually commissioning and that SSG recommended The Citadel in Charleston, SC over West Point because in his experience officers from The Citadel were more competent and humble (they also have a great Engineering Program, for all readers seeing this while in high school and planning their futures). I'd only recommend West Point to someone who plans on serving 20+ years simply because the connections they'd make with superior officers may help climb the ranks faster and get better assignments.

While in basic training, we had 3 West Point Cadets on our Cadre team. They could have ground us into dust, they were razor sharp, and high speed. I admired their dedication, at least 4 years of school, followed by 5 years minimum enlistment active duty. When you're 19, that seems like forever.

I was in the USMA class of 1965. We were taught "Duty, Honor, Country". At the time I believed in that code absolutely. I served two tours in Vietnam, even though I realised half way through my first tour that the war was pointless, immoral and, perhaps worst of all, unwinnable. The West Point ethos, sadly, is a myth based on invalid and outdated ideals of service to one's country, whether right or wrong. You may think my negative attitude is colored by my experiences in Vietnam and you may be correct; I saw far too many of my classmates go home in coffins. But We MUST learn to think for ourselves and not just blindly accept that "our side is always right, even if it is wrong". Otherwise, our democracy, fought and died for by so many, is doomed.

Former Marine here with a Naval Academy story. I had a buddy who went to Annapolis. He was a Sergeant who had done three combat tours in Iraq when he got his Academy appointment. He got in trouble initially at the USNA for laughing in the faces of the upperclassmen who tried to “stress” him by yelling or making him exercise. My buddy was a Bronze Star winner, had seen friends of his die, and no two ways to say it, killed guys in combat. The idea of him getting stressed by some pimply 20 year old is ridiculous. The good news is one of the senior officers pulled him aside and said look, I understand where you came from and what you’ve done but please, just go along to get along and graduate. My buddy did, successfully graduated, and is now an infantry company commander. After that conversation with the CO, though, the attempts to “stress” my friend went down significantly. Lol

To anyone considering joining the military: NEVER BLINDLY FOLLOW ORDERS. Always continue to think for yourself. If your commanding officer orders you to do anything that isn't ethical, or isn't something that feels right, TELL THEM NO. Free thinking and freedom are gifts to be treasured. Don't let anyone take that from you.

As an Army officer, I agree. Most of my experience has been with fine, principled officers, but it would be naïve to suggest that only such sorts of people are in the ranks. At West Point, we have a heavy emphasis on teaching and training leaders of character, and I always hope that if they find themselves in a situation where they're told to do something wrong by a leader, they will have the courage to do the more difficult right. All of the officers I know here feel similarly.

I fondly recall my first days in the military. The haircut, collecting our military attire, and meeting our drill instructors. Growing up an Army brat, our introduction to boot camp held no surprises for me. While there were guys who were somewhat frightened, not one of them showed real terror. I recently spoke to one of the lifelong friends I made back then. We always bring up the time we spent during our indoctrination and chuckle together. Compared to our time in combat, boot was nothing. I think that if you're shipped off to fight not too long after you receive your specialized training, depending on your MOS of course, then I doubt your experience in boot will be poorly thought of afterward. At least that's how we think of it when my friend and I talk about it now. Seeing some of your friends killed in battle changes how you think of times like military indoctrination. Again though, those are only the thoughts of 2 men, other people may have entirely different ideas. For us though, it's almost always; c'est la vie, c'est la guerre.

@gwolff You had a tough beat. My guess is that you patrol in large city? It's just a guess. I worked as a bodyguard/private investigator in the Detroit Metro Area at the time that crack cocaine was a thing. Another PI and I were hired to find 2 crack hookers and transport them to another county that was west and north of Wayne County that most of Detroit occupies. Because I had been working in the area, I knew exactly where to find the girls. And damned if I wasn't right. We each took one girl, in case something went wrong. The girls were my friend's client's alibi. Things are not going too well when 2 crack hooked are your alibi for a B and E. Right? I should have known something was off when the one I was transporting sat in the back seat. She had whipped out a crack pipe and was just about to smoke some when I looked in the rear view mirror and stopped her. I knew the attorney prosecuting the case. It turned out that both girls had outstanding warrants in the other county. I came to an agreement that both ladies were to be transported back to Wayne County and out of the prosecutor's jurisdiction. The things you do sometimes. Oh well, it worked out. My PI buddy's client was acquitted and the young ladies were delivered back to Wayne County. I had a hard time comprehending how the girl I was moving was going to smoke crack next to my 7 month old daughter's car seat. I was hoping it would act as a deterrent to illegal activities. At least she didn't try to hit me up for some sex act in my car. They happened to my friend. He told me and all I could think was, "We're on our way to court and you are thinking about how you can make a few bucks plying your sex trade with the guy taking you to court? Really? Wow, that was just stupid to me. Oh well. I was working a case where this guy who had been separated from his family for 6 or 7 years, but he had been drunk and walking in the middle of a fast road at 3 AM, and got hit and dragged by an ambulance for almost a quarter of a mile. The autopsy photos were very grim. Oddly, his oldest son wanted to see what had happened to dear old dad.?' I found that rather strange.

I can't speak for military, but as law enforcement, I can say there is a mutual feeling. During the academy (depending on where you go) life is miserable. My academy was 6 months, it was hard on every aspect of my life and it even put a huge strain on my relationships. That was nothing compared to what I've gone through in 3 years of my career. Multiple partners being killed, seeing many more people murdered. At the end of the day, the academy, like military indoctrination, is a controlled environment. While difficult, it is quite safe. You realize that all the yelling and stress that was put on you was for a reason, and it was only to prepare you for the reality you did not yet know. The violence in law enforcement can pale in comparison to the military, I acknowledge that. But I see where you're coming from.

@Mick Bourne you have to understand the Britain and the US have pretty different societies and cultures. Trust me, most of the cadets you see in this video are major assholes when they come in bc they're used to being on top, I was one when I came in and they humble you quick. The shouting makes you uncomfortable, and the rushing is simply because there's not a lot of time. The academies are still universities and you have to condense bootcamp into half a summer before classes start and the cadets are way too busy with coursework for regimental training

Месяц назад
Eagle X. Thomaston
Eagle X. Thomaston

they only tell you for your first year there bc you're meant to be broken down. In order to even be at west point you have to have been incredibly smart and competent leaders, many of whom have inflated egos. This breaks them and and they are rebuilt over the next couple of years there to think for themselves. You're only told what to do during training/beast/indoc (depending on the academy), and then after that you're basically thrown to the wolves to figure stuff out on your own. The academies train leaders that can lead people below them, follow people above them, and work together with their peers. Officers still have to follow a chain of command, so unless every single service academy grad becomes the president there will always be people above and below them

The United States Army absolutely trains leaders to take their own initiative. I know because I've been in the Army for years and I'm currently one of the officers who teaches cadets at the Academy. We always need to know the mission and our commander's intent, but we expect leaders at all levels to be adaptable. Junior enlisted soldiers must be particularly disciplined and always follow orders, but in higher ranks we expect more. New cadets start from a position similar to new enlisted soldiers, but even during the fours years they're at the Academy, they increase in responsibility and have more liberties granted. The yelling is by no means a constant thing here.

Месяц назад
gwolff

In US military training you are taught first and foremost to learn to follow orders. This is part because a large portion of young people in the US have never had respect for anyone and don't follow anyone's directives. That's why the military makes men out of people who would otherwise go on to become criminals. Second, you are taught to be a leader, which is more in line with what you are referencing. At the very beginning, discipline must be instilled. Perhaps that's why the colonies beat the British. Just saying.

Back in 1985 i joined the Army as a 19E. ONSUT at Ft Knox and then off to Ft Stewart, GA for my first duty station. I was there about 2 months when I got a letter through the unit ordering me to attend a meeting on post. It was a meeting about attending the West Point Prepatory School, at the time in Ft Monmouth, NJ. I kick myself for not completing the paperwork and see if I could gain acceptance to West Point. At the time I believe I was identified due to my high ASFAB score. If I could go back to my 18 year old self, I'd impress upon him how beneficial West Point could be in a future he could not possibly imagine.

"High academics." Well if you have high academics you should be able to get a decent scholarship, recieve government aid if possible, and work your ass off to get where you want to go much quicker than you would going through the army. It's totally possible to get through college debt-free. To be honest if your situation isn't the best at home and you only have decent academics it should be possible. Just putting this here in case anyone feels lost. Once the army has you, it takes a while for you to really gain your freedom back considering it would be for college money. With the amount of time it takes to get through college normally plus military training and service, it's better just to bust your ass and make a lot of money, save it throughout your high-school years, and get through schooling as quick as possible instead. Saves you precious years of your life for pretty much the same outcome.

There are a lot of good options in life. For those who want to serve the nation in the military, West Point is quite an opportunity for not only world-class education but also leadership training. Officers are immediately put in supervisory positions. It's not exactly the same as other ways to get an education, but it's a very good option for many people.

I went enlisted but did 9 years and got my bachelors before getting out thanks to the free tuition assistance. Used the GI Bill to get 2 masters afterwards. All paid for by the military. Seems like it's the same shit going to the academy or westpoint. You pay for that education no matter what. Honestly, you deal with just as much, if not more BS as an officer than when you're enlisted.
