If migrating species land on the Berkeley Pit for more than a few hours, they get cooked from the inside out. Now, miners use a rifle, drones, and lasers to scare the birds away.

Right? Saving wildlife from the pollution that we cause. I'd say the best way to do that is to take down all of the massive polluting companies that don't give a shit and restart civilization in little villages.

The last time I was at Berkeley Pit back in the 90’s, the water levels were drastically low and you could still seen tunnels from underground mining along the walls of the pit. Yeah the water wasn’t safe and there were also problems to keep the birds out of the water but nothing like what is shown in this video. My favorite bar was just across the street from the pit in the Helsinki district and where Columbia Gardens Amusement park once stood.

Why don’t they just invest some of those “multi-millions of dollars” in draining the water or removing it and taking it to a toxic waste dump. Seems like a cheaper option than just shooting rounds at birds 24/7 but idk that’s just me

Any hunters worth their salt are, albeit un-intuitively, some of the most qualified people to assist in wildlife preservation. To the same tune, my sister became a forestry professional with the exact intention of forest preservation.

Месяц назад
BroAugDog +1

There is a large, large gap between wanting to preserve what you hunt, and wanting to preserve an ecosystem that supports what you hunt. Hunters put out feed for deer in winter all the time to "preserve" the population only to realize later, artificially supporting a population just delays and exacerbates the boom and bust cycle.

@Drale L First, you have a poor understanding of this location. I lived in butte for many years. The Pit is not open and free. It's a crappy dust pit literally on the edge of Butte. You are not in nature, there is no wildlife to enjoy, it's just a big open hole of toxic crap with a half abandoned town full of tweakers and alcoholics as your backdrop. This job is also not easy. It can get very stressful given that hundreds of thousands of birds depend on you. It's not something one guy could do, it takes an entire team working together, employing the use of expensive and valuable equipment., This ABSOLUTELY is exactly what our tax dollars are for you nincompoop. I wouldn't want Joe Blow from the youtube comment section to be responsible for any part of that.

@MrStrawHat Ah, I didn't know the depth was an issue - obviously, yeah, a support of some sort would be needed. I guess flotation rings could hang something up - but that's an ongoing maintenance cost that may be less time efficient & more expensive in the long run. Well, this gives a guy a rad job for a life & something super intriguing for us to see! Thanks for the reply.

15 дней назад
MrStrawHat

@Cairn this is a multi mile long pit. A wire cage would sag over that length, the pit so deep that building supports is unreasonable. Paying a guy to sit and shoot birds is cheaper long term when compared to the cost of building and maintaining such a structure.

In many places around the world, Hunters and Fishermen are the foremost activists for conservation of wildlife. If the species they hunt aren't protected then their food sources dry up, Hunters are also very clued into the habits and migrations of their quarry and are valuable sources of information. Just to add the caveat, not all are like this but where I live in Australia it is definitely more a rule than not.

Held liable for what? It’s not a public resource.. It’s private property. The mining company owned the land.. I don’t know if it has since been sold, but I assume it is still owned by the same company, another company, or either sold to the state, but at the end of the day someone owns it.. It’s not a lake.. It’s a pit.. If it were not for the mining company coming in and digging, it would simply be a surface you could walk on.. It’s toxicity isn’t because a company dumped chemicals or waste into it.. it’s naturally toxic.. Meaning the sulfur and whatever other minerals, that’s makes up the pit is what is causing the toxicity.. And how exactly do you suggest someone clean up what is naturally occurring? Pump out the water? It’s only going to refill with ground water or rain, again.. Filter out the toxins? They’re only going to return. Because no matter how much filtration is being done, the make up of the earth cannot be changed.. The sulfur and other minerals are still present in the ground.. someone mentioned filling it with dirt.. From where? Because you can’t use the dirt surrounding it.. It’s made up of the same minerals.. You could import dirt from elsewhere but that is way too expensive to do.. and it isn’t guaranteed to actually work.. so any efforts are futile.. the best COA is to do what they are doing now..

@Omar Ebid I am not much of a politician myself, but I am not certain how easy it would be to convince the federal government to pay for a state issue. I understand your disarray, but in face of what happened I am not entirely sure that the culprit can be forced to do considering that they are actually doing something (again if these are actually lime towers otherwise they probably should have them). It will take some time but this acid lake should neutralize itself over sometime and pumping the water in and out doesn't seem wise. Someone mentioned placing a huge net over it. I sounds like a decent idea to and I don't know why they have not done so. Probably because it costs millions if not close to billions to do.

4 месяца назад
Peter August
Peter August

@Omar Ebid If you would hold them accountable morenthen they are now, then either no one would take over the position or they would require to earn even more money. Both will result in a massive increase of cost for ressoruces that are prone to create pollution, like copper, and thus result in much higher prices for everything you do and buy. The company is not doing this because it is evil, the company is doing this because YOU need copper and because YOU are willing to pay a maximum amount for that ressoruce.

It would have to be a serious operation, because it's miles wide and the net would sag, unless a structure is built over it, which would of course be extremely expensive. Flotation devices would probably be the solution long-term solution, but for now it is actually cheaper to just employ people to keep watch, and it also provides jobs.

I agree, mining companies and executives that help finance their ventures walk away after selling their shares and the companies go bankrupt they walk away with all the cash. Or require that they have capital set aside by government holding cash until they repair the place, then they get their damage deposit back.

@N Y O X A E Well you don’t need to know exactly what he is thinking to understand the bare minimum required to accomplish what he wants to do. We know the size of the lake, the plan of action (he wants a net of some sort), and the possible birds that interact with it (range from very small to rather large). For any material to last, we know it must be able to withstand the acid, and that it must be able to span over acres. This means significantly increasing infrastructure in the lake with non-corrosive materials (expensive to say the least), or as other have pointed out, using enough force via something like an suspension bridge. This is also still subject to maintenance, so factoring all that in, we reach an unrealistic goal that fails to fix the problem in its entirety, and has a cost cap well above what would be feasible. The plan he has also relies on his credibility of literally nothing other than his self proclaimed genius, which amounts to less than nothing. People much smarter than all of us in the necessary fields, and much more aware of the surrounding circumstances have likely worked on solution within the context of budget constraints, and deemed this the best current solution. It’s not a fix, but a fix would cost significantly more than available to these people.

I mean, why can’t it be capped? Even if you use fencing to fine for birds to pass through but strong enough for debris. (if it needs to off gas) It just seems like exposure of any length wouldn’t be ideal, and preventing that exposure would be the best control. What they’re doing now seems costly, and cleaning and restoring that water seems nearly impossible given the ground water and soil contamination.

Out of curiosity, has nobody thought to fill the lake or cover it so the birds simply don't land on the water? Perhaps the balls that are used in the reservoirs in california to reduce evaporation could be useful here as well?

@shano6613 they can try. I don't think anyone can fundamentally change the world. There are those who are given the chance and opportunity and those whose effect is virtually pointless. Life is not about forcing events to occur, but that the events which do occur are manifested by fate and the working of the human being as a giant unit

@TheBowen747 i say always that the only success is a peaceful death because you die by the means you live and you can't guarantee peace if you dont live for peace. And a peaceful death is how we avoid an empty and lonely afterlife. Every pattern precedes another pattern and if we don't acknowldge this fact we end up on the wrong path. The way of the world is not the same as the way of life. Our world is artificial, but peace is only found in the natural.

If they stretch lines high across the water and then hang lines from those, as long as the birds can see the lines. Would they try to land there? If the lines are close together the birds will know they cant fly thru it to land.

The American Inverted-Totalitarian Government, and the businesses that are a part of it, and the cabal that controls it, are the number one enemies to humanity, and the most dangerous threat to humanity in the history of the world. The second entity that is the most dangerous to humanity in the history of the world is the vast majority of the American people for allowing this tyranny instead of eradicating it!

@Perkaholic You know what's really funny? The acidic nature of the pit isn't in any way from mining chemicals like you'd think. Its a reaction between water which is seeping in from the water table and naturally occurring minerals in the soil. In other words the toxic mess is simply the natural result of a big hole in the ground filling with water.

Is there a reason why they don't use Birds of Prey to scare the fowl away? Where I live they use falcons to keep the gulls away from the city center. They don't kill or eat the gulls, just scare them away ( and it is cool to watch). I realise a goose probably is not intimidated by a falcon, but u have Birds of Prey that hunt Geese.
