I'm a summer camp counselor, and I teach my kids leather working classes. I often get asked if you can make leather from fish, when I teach them what animals you can get leather from. This video made me really excited, this is really cool and I would love to have some as an example to show the kids! I might have to track some down 👀

@Alyssa Barr Alaska Natives have been using fish skin to make waterproof boots and coats for a long time

12 дней назад

Alyssa Barr

@Logan Cressler I know it's definitely not a new practice, I was researching it years ago but since the industrial revolution it did kind of disappear but it is back now and has been for a while at least. I am surprised ppl think it's new or r just hearing about it for the first time. But a few yrs ago I was researching a lot about nature and I googled if u can make leather with fish skin because it was an idea for a middle ground between vegans and non vegans and easier on the ecosystem plus I just thought it's cool to have different leathers and furs and see how they work and differ from each other , tho I do feel bad for the animals

@Watasi Myaekapite amber is a plastic. What I am trying to say is plastics are a lot more common than what people may assume. Plastics are a group of materials, either synthetic or naturally occurring, that may be shaped when soft and then hardened to retain the given shape. Plastics are polymers. A polymer is a substance made of many repeating units. that is what I've learned in school. With that being said, you can find that resins, and amber fits that definition of a plastic. Please stop picking and choosing based on your opinion, and know that material science is a real thing

Those complaining about the fish smell must have forgotten that alligator skin is sought after and would smell essentially the same 😭

@patman0250 😂 This post actually made me look it up, as like you, if never really considered it was thick enough to be made into leather. And apparently, for its thickness, it's reasonably strong.... Go figure 🤷‍♀️. Still not sure if I'd want a Halibut leather jacket 😁

День назад
patman0250
patman0250

@Lena Those problems probably smelled because they were dead already. But fish kind of smell all the time. But I never really would have thought that fish skin could be leatherized. I always thought their skin was basically just scales. I don't know but I rather wear possum leather shoes and fish leather shoes that just sounds weird.

День назад
Lena
Lena

@patman0250 i dunno. Possum, (Aussie possum) stinks so bad that farmers have possum clothes that aren't allowed in the house and usually have their own washing machine 🤣. And yet , tanned and cured , their firs smell like normal leather . Tanning chemicals are pretty potent. I just wonder how durable it is . Fish skin is pretty thin .

4 дня назад
patman0250 +1
patman0250

@Lena Yeah but normal cow skin when it's alive doesn't smell at all. Fish on the other hand always smell like fish, a different beast totally. I guarantee you this leather on a hot day you'd be able to get a tinge of the smell.

4 дня назад
patman0250 +1
patman0250

Yeah but there are more fish than alligator. And the point was to utilize the billions of fish skins. Obviously if alligator skin was abundant and being tossed out in the trash, they would have used that, but that wasn't the point.

@Grover Martin If you have the youtube app on your phone you can make a short. its pretty simple. It only takes a couple of mins to or less to upload a short. I do some from time to time. Take the case and set it on a table and think about what you want to say. Like for example this is my fish skin case from alaska. then upload the short and tell the person who said show me. Title it and you might get lucky and it goes viral. Might not yet you never know.

fish leather is the same thing as regular cow leather. The skin is being used as a byproduct from the use of the meat. when a cow is killed for its meat, the skin is the waste and it is used for leather just like a fish would be killed for the meat and then the skin is used for leather. cows are not killed for their skin to be used, they are killed for the meat. it would be the same for fish. it’s a common misconception. however i do agree that plant leathers are the future and i hope that we get to that point.

I love the scale impression left behind, I’d love to make a purse out of it. I’d feel a hell of a lot better wearing this instead of alligator skin. More so just because we’re always going to have extra skin from fish, there’s no reason to waste what those little guys gave to us. I know they’re just fish but it just seems horrible to waste something so potentially useful.

I remember reading somewhere that the way they counted the number of dead on the RMS Titanic was by counting the pairs of shoes. The sealife couldn't process the tannins in the leather, so they were left intact. I don't know if we've run out of the other dozen types of animal leather we're already producing. We've just made this less biodegradeable.

The native people Inupiaq and Yupik of both from Alaska and Canada use to make water proof/resistance boots from fish skins and they worked surprisingly well. Only down fall was if they step in literally dog shit it would ruin the boots cause of something in the dog’s shit would slowly eat through or restart the decay process of the fish skin boots. Well that what one of the elder of my village told me when I was young. I would want to try myself but salmon skins are pretty tasty either cooked, fried, or smoked. So it be a long while before I give it a go.
